We're pleased to announce our second seminar of the semester. Our speaker will be Professor Eileen Kane who will be discussing: "Writing Russian History into Ottoman History (and Vice Versa)."  Professor Kane teaches modern European and Russian history at Connecticut College. Her first book, Russian Hajj: Empire and the Pilgrimage to Mecca (Cornell, 2015) tells the story of how Russia, a Christian power, came to sponsor the hajj, a central Muslim ritual. Her current research looks at Russia's role in the making of the modern Middle East, through a focus on migration.

This talk will explore some of the methodological issues involved in writing history that crosses Russo-Ottoman borders, look closely at examples of new works that attempt to do this, and discuss potential rewards for doing more of this kind of history.
