Faculty Position: Qur'anic Studies

The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the Religious Studies Program invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in Qur'anic Studies to begin fall semester 2017 (8/28/2017).  We seek intellectually ambitious candidates with interdisciplinary aptitude, poised to become leaders in the field.  A Ph.D. in Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, or other related area is required by the start date, August 28, 2017.

Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). Appointment will be at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor, depending on qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policy.

We are searching for a scholar of early Islam with clear expertise in the interpretation of the Qur'an and related literature and history of this period. Possible areas of specialization include, but are not limited to:

  • Issues of exegesis, rhetoric, oral and written textuality (textual history, intertextuality)

  • Critical historical, comparative, literary, or sociological approaches to the Qur'an and related literature

  • Interpretive traditions over time, cultural connections with non-Islamic traditions

  • Islamic legal studies
