Join us for a virtual open house for prospective applicants to learn more about the fellowships. The virtual session will provide an overview of these opportunities including: application criteria, fellowship benefits, tips for applying, deadlines and more. Faculty and staff will be ready to answer your questions.
Two fellowships opportunities are open for new applications: the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship and the Theodore de Bary Language Study Fellowship. Fellowships are intended to support students studying Arabic, Persian, Turkish, or Hebrew. Students from all Columbia and Barnard departments and schools are encouraged to apply for either fellowship.
FLAS Fellowship (for U.S. citizens)
FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate and professional students. FLAS Fellowships are available for the academic year and summer. Full academic year fellowships combine modern foreign-language training with international or area studies. Summer fellowships cover students' travel and living expenses for intensive study in the U.S. or abroad. The FLAS fellowships are funded under Title VI grants from the U.S. Department of Education and are for US Citizens.
Deadline: February 11th 2021
Academic Year awards for graduate students: $18,000 tuition and a $15,000 stipend.
Academic Year awards for undergraduates: $10,000 tuition and a $5,000 stipend.
Summer awards for graduate or undergraduate students: $5,000 tuition and a $2,500 stipend
De Bary Fellowship (for international students)
The Theodore de Bary Language Study Fellowship complements the FLAS, making study abroad funding available to undergraduate international students who are not American citizens or permanent residents. These awards can be used for intensive summer language study in the U.S. or abroad and offers funding towards summer program tuition and living expenses.

*Travel restrictions may be in place for both Summer 2021 and AY 2021-22 and fellowship recipients should remain flexible in their plans.
