Founded in 2016, the Islamic History Workshop regularly features leading scholars of Islamic history from across periods and regions for detailed discussions of their current research.

The series is organized by Dr. Ali Karjoo-Ravary (Columbia’s Richard W. Bulliet Assistant Professor of Islamic History), and Dr. Najam Haider (Professor of Religion and Chair of the Religion Department Barnard College).

Scholars are invited to give a short presentation on a pre-circulated work in progress to contextualize the project.  Next, a discussion is led by faculty and graduate student respondents, who offer their reflections and pose stimulating questions.  Fruitful discussion follows.  Attendees of different specializations often share new perspectives that enrich the final product.
